Starting April 15, 2000 the FCC restructured the
Amateur Radio licenses. Prior to
this restructuring there were 6 license classes for Amateur Radio, Novice,
Technician, Technician Plus, General, Advanced and Extra.
As of the April 15, 2000 the restructuring collapsed the 6 licenses into
3 as indicated in the following table. There
are now 3 written elements and one code element.

The Technician Class is considered to
be the entry level into amateur radio. However,
that does preclude a new amateur radio operator from entering at either the
General or Amateur Extra Class as long the required elements are successfully
passed. For new entry into amateur
radio for Technician Class you must pass element 1.
If you are currently a Technician Class and wanting to upgrade to General
Class you will need to pass element 1 and 3. If your are a new to amateur radio and want to start as a
General Class you will be required to pass element 1, 2 and 3.
Element 1 is the telegraphy
examination. You are required to
pass a telegraphy examination by demonstrating the capability to send and
receive at a rate of at least 5 words per minute.
Element 2 is a 35 question
multiple-choice examination concerning the privileges of the Technician Class. The minimum required score is 26.
Element 3 is a 35 question
multiple-choice examination concerning the privileges of the General Class. The minimum required score is 26.
Element 4 is a 50 question
multiple-choice examination concerning the privileges of the Amateur Extra
Class. The minimum required score is 37.
